My prayer and hope is to not force my conviction on anyone, but that anyone reading it will know that these are God's standards, not mine; I'm just venting what I've been noticing in the media.
There is this 'thing' that flaunts itself all over magazines in the cashout lane, it's in a short 10 second commerical, it's in movies, it's on the web, it's even in books. People are so drawn to this 'thing' because it is a temporarilly enjoyment. It is the thing that is easy to get and makes people feel good. This thing?....is sex. We can't get away from it because it is everywhere, but we can avoid it.
Something is wrong when lost people and Christians do the same things....one of these things that I happen to have a burden about is movies.
God states in Exodus 20:14 "Thou shalt not commit adultery." This means to not have sex outside the boundaries of marriage. Jesus then states in Matthew that the act of thinking, or dwelling on the impure thought is just as bad as the act of doing it; "Whosever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. -Matthew 5:28".
Having said that, is it ok to joke about sex if you're not married, is it ok to watch a movie with sexual inuendos, is it ok to watch a movie that has a sex scene, is it ok to watch a movie that has multiple sex scenes? These are all questions that I've heard many of my Christian friends say, "It's not wrong to watch those movies." But if we turn the quesiton over to"Is it ok to watch a pornography?" We would all say that pornography is wrong, correct? So the fact that you see both parties with no clothes and showing full intercourse is worse than a movie showing 5 seconds of a couple having sex with a girls chest shown? I can't find reason as to why one of those is ok by society and why the other one is not accepted. What is the difference that makes a partial sex scene ok to watch rather than a full sex scene? Isn't a white lie the same as a lie?
I was flipping through tv channels the other day when I stumbled upon this Q&A of a host asking a celebrity female, "You say you are against killing animals, but you are perfectly fine with posing nude in playboy. Where are your morals?" The lady responded something like, "I just do what I want." The thing that makes me sick is that people do things without having a reason for why they are doing it. Then the host asked her, "Would you be ok if your daughter started posing nude." The woman replied and said "My daughter would not do that because I will keep her away from it. I am not ok with that at all!" The host said, "If you can do it, then aren't you setting the standard for your daughter of telling her she can do it too?" The woman was getting defensive and told the host to mind his own business. I mentioned this because people are saying that it's wrong for kids to see sexual content, but yet, the parents are not living by example.
There are many reasons why the porn industry is growing, but I would have to say that one reason for its incline is due to people first watching the movies that have the 5 second sex scenes at first. Now here is the twist, is it ok to see a 5 second sex scene in a movie? The same answer is NO! From something that I had learned from my own experience, was that the first time I watched a sex scene in a movie, I didn't think it was that bad. So the next time I would see a different movie with a sex scene, in my mind I would justify that 'It's not that bad', and I would be ok to see more and more movies with sex scenes until finally...you get to the bad stuff.
Just the other day, I was hurt to hear that a Christian lady went to see a movie that was rated R for its strong sexual content, while she stayed to see the whole movie, she was telling me that she had no conviction in her to let her know "This is just wrong!" She told me that it was the funniest movie she has probably ever seen minus the sex stuff. I'm not judging her, but I was just shocked to find out that 99% of the movie was about sex. Why didn't she walk out? In fact, why are so many Christians ok with watching sex scenes, but are yet against watching porn? This is such a double standard!
I actually have a lot more to say on this matter...but I just can't seem to finish tonight. I was planning on just keeping this as a private blog...but I want my friends to know where I stand on sexuality in movies.
If you desire to please the Lord by not watching things that have evil things in them, put blockades up the next time you see a movie. I use http://www.pluggedin.com/ before I see most movies. It gives a detailed list of the sexual content and other negative elements in a movie.
In Christ,
